Depression has several forms. Diagnosing depression, the doctor uses different medical terms. This can be neurotic or endogenous depression, unipolar or bipolar, situational or reactive depression. Each type requires its approach and method of treatment.
When you hear the term neurotic depression, it means that the condition is caused by a reaction to different life situations. However, unlike to the situational or reactive depression, neurotic depression may be more prolonged and does not disappear immediately after the psychotraumatic situation. However, neurotic depression can be quickly treated, if the patient carefully performs all prescription and does not neglect its recommendations.
Endogenous depression is caused by a particular susceptibility of the patient for this type of reactions. It involves not only personal characteristics, human reaction, but also changes in the genetic apparatus, its metabolism, human biology. Such depression may occur suddenly, without any negative aspects of life and situations. The depression starting mechanism is not only the anxiety but it can be even the change of the seasons, or banal cold, and depression can last for several months. The disease may have one attack, but it may be repeated many times, at least, at the age of menopause.
At some stage bipolar depression is replaced by the opposite condition, painfully elevated mood appears (manic state), which may cause some danger, and after such a painful rise, as a rule, bad mood occurs. There is no such mood difference in the unipolar case. The disease is taking its normal emotional state.
