Medications. Drugs for anxiety psychosis and depression are usually used to treat schizophrenia. The use of these types of drugs can be explained by the fact that schizophrenia is anxiety disorder, mood disorder and thought disorder.

Anti-psychotic medications that are commonly used for the treatment of schizophrenia are:

  • Risperidone. Appeared in 1994. Its sedative effect is lower is compared to the others. Among the side-effects extrapyramidal symptoms, weight gain, diabetes can be named although the latter two are less likely to be caused by Risperidone than by Olanzapine or Clozapine.

  • Ziprasidone. Appeared in 2001. Dosage - 80-160 mg a day. Exprapyramidal symptoms are unlikely to develop. Diabetes and weigh gain are probable but the risk to develop these side-effects is lower than in the others. Nevertheless, it might cause cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Clozapine. Appeared in 1990. Dosage - 300-700 mg a day. Lowers suicidal behaviors. It can influence the white blood cells count so the patient’s blood should be monitored regularly. The risk of diabetes and weight gain is high.
